The MERCOSUR tufted carpet market contracted to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -6.5% against the previous year. In general, consumption recorded a perceptible shrinkage. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of tufted carpets and other tufted textile floor coverings decreased by -39.2% to X square meters, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 45%. The volume of export peaked at X square meters in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, tufted carpet exports contracted dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a perceptible decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 28% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Chile dominates exports structure, finishing at X square meters, which was approx. 79% of total exports in 2022. Brazil (X square meters) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 8.5% share, followed by Paraguay (8.1%). Argentina (X square meters) took a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Chile increased at an average annual rate of +15.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Paraguay (+43.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Paraguay emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +43.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Brazil (-10.7%) and Argentina (-24.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Chile and Paraguay increased by +60 and +8.1 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Chile ($X) remains the largest tufted carpet supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brazil ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Paraguay, with a 5.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Chile stood at +19.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Brazil (-13.0% per year) and Paraguay (+41.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per square meter, with an increase of 2.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 16% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per square meter. From 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per square meter), while Paraguay ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (+4.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, approx. X square meters of tufted carpets and other tufted textile floor coverings were imported in MERCOSUR; which is down by -18.8% against the year before. Total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +17.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X square meters, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, tufted carpet imports declined sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a noticeable slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Chile represented the key importer of tufted carpets and other tufted textile floor coverings in MERCOSUR, with the volume of imports finishing at X square meters, which was approx. 55% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Peru (X square meters), Brazil (X square meters), Colombia (X square meters) and Argentina (X square meters), together creating a 37% share of total imports. Ecuador (X square meters) and Uruguay (X square meters) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Chile was also the fastest-growing in terms of the tufted carpets and other tufted textile floor coverings imports, with a CAGR of +10.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Ecuador (+7.9%), Peru (+5.6%) and Argentina (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Colombia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern.
