In 2021, the MERCOSUR passenger car tyre market increased by 9.7% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, passenger car tyre production shrank slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 7.4% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, passenger car tyre exports in MERCOSUR soared to X units, jumping by 19% against the previous year's figure. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, passenger car tyre exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a perceptible decrease. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Brazil represented the key exporter of tyres for motor cars in MERCOSUR, with the volume of exports reaching X units, which was near 49% of total exports in 2021. Chile (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 31% share, followed by Peru (13%). The following exporters - Argentina (X units) and Ecuador (X units) - each recorded a 6.7% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Peru (with a CAGR of +9.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest passenger car tyre supplying countries in MERCOSUR were Brazil ($X), Chile ($X) and Peru ($X), together accounting for 93% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Peru, with a CAGR of +5.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per unit, growing by 6.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced curtailment. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Ecuador ($X per unit), while Peru ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ecuador (+1.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2021, passenger car tyre imports in MERCOSUR soared to X units, with an increase of 44% on the previous year's figure. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, passenger car tyre imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a mild contraction. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Brazil represented the main importing country with an import of about X units, which accounted for 48% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Colombia (X units), Chile (X units), Ecuador (X units), Argentina (X units) and Peru (X units), together generating a 44% share of total imports. Paraguay (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Brazil experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of tyres for motor cars. At the same time, Peru (+8.7%), Chile (+7.2%) and Ecuador (+5.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Peru emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +8.7% from 2012-2021. Colombia, Argentina and Paraguay experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Chile (+4.8 p.p.), Peru (+3.2 p.p.) and Ecuador (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported tyres for motor cars in MERCOSUR, comprising 36% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Chile ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Colombia, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Brazil amounted to -3.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Chile (+7.2% per year) and Colombia (+0.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per unit in 2021, growing by 11% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced descent. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Paraguay ($X per unit), while Brazil ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
