Exports in MERCOSUR

Umbrella exports soared to X units in 2022, picking up by 27% on the previous year's figure. Overall, exports, however, faced a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 48%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, umbrella exports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 23%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Chile was the major exporting country with an export of about X units, which reached 69% of total exports. Brazil (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 20% share, followed by Colombia (7.8%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to umbrella exports from Chile stood at -12.5%. At the same time, Brazil (+13.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Brazil emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +13.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Colombia (-2.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Brazil and Colombia increased by +18 and +4.4 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Chile ($X) remains the largest umbrella supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brazil ($X), with a 17% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Chile stood at -6.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Brazil (+5.2% per year) and Colombia (+9.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per unit, reducing by -9.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 155%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per unit), while Brazil ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Colombia (+12.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, purchases abroad of umbrellas increased by 80% to X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, showed a perceptible curtailment. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, umbrella imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a noticeable shrinkage. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Brazil prevails in imports structure, recording X units, which was near 81% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Argentina (X units), comprising a 5.1% share of total imports. Chile (X units), Peru (X units), Colombia (X units) and Ecuador (X units) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to umbrella imports into Brazil stood at -3.5%. At the same time, Ecuador (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ecuador emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +1.3% from 2012-2022. Argentina experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Chile (-3.4%), Peru (-4.5%) and Colombia (-18.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Brazil (+7.5 p.p.) and Argentina (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Colombia (-9.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported umbrellas in MERCOSUR, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Chile ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Argentina, with a 12% share.

In Brazil, umbrella imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Chile (+1.0% per year) and Argentina (+5.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per unit in 2022, with a decrease of -24.5% against the previous year. Import price indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, umbrella import price increased by +58.8% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 49%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per unit), while Brazil ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
