The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 24%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +38.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 41% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, orange juice (single strength) imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +26.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 52%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Chile dominates imports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 67% of total imports in 2021. Uruguay (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 9.4% share, followed by Suriname (6.1%) and Paraguay (4.7%). Ecuador (X tons), Argentina (X tons) and Guyana (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to orange juice (single strength) imports into Chile stood at +25.9%. At the same time, Paraguay (+134.1%), Argentina (+29.3%), Uruguay (+10.7%) and Guyana (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Paraguay emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +134.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Suriname (-1.8%) and Ecuador (-3.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Chile (+52 p.p.), Paraguay (+4.7 p.p.), Uruguay (+2.8 p.p.) and Argentina (+2.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Ecuador and Suriname saw its share reduced by -5.6% and -6.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Chile ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported orange juice (single strength) in MERCOSUR, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uruguay ($X), with a 6.2% share of total imports. It was followed by Paraguay, with a 3.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Chile stood at +28.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uruguay (+5.0% per year) and Paraguay (+132.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -3.8% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 21%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Guyana ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ecuador (+5.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
