In 2022, the MERCOSUR video game console market increased by 20% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a deep downturn. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, shipments abroad of video game consoles decreased by -32.6% to X units, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, exports saw a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 611% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, video game console exports fell notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a perceptible setback. Exports by Country

Chile (X units) and Brazil (X units) prevails in exports structure, together achieving 88% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Ecuador (X units), mixing up a 6.4% share of total exports. Colombia (X units) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Ecuador (with a CAGR of +64.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Chile ($X) remains the largest video game console supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($X), with a 27% share of total exports. It was followed by Ecuador, with a 3.8% share.

In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 23% against the previous year. Export price indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, video game console export price increased by +84.7% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 43%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, overseas purchases of video game consoles increased by 24% to X units, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, saw a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, video game console imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 58% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Brazil represented the largest importer of video game consoles in MERCOSUR, with the volume of imports finishing at X units, which was approx. 49% of total imports in 2022. Colombia (X units) took a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Chile (16%), Paraguay (5.2%) and Peru (4.9%). Argentina (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Brazil was also the fastest-growing in terms of the video game consoles imports, with a CAGR of +6.5% from 2012 to 2022. Colombia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Chile (-1.3%), Peru (-5.8%), Argentina (-21.6%) and Paraguay (-24.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Brazil (+37 p.p.), Colombia (+10 p.p.) and Chile (+7.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Argentina and Paraguay saw its share reduced by -11.2% and -35.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest video game console importing markets in MERCOSUR were Brazil ($X), Chile ($X) and Colombia ($X), together accounting for 78% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Brazil, with a CAGR of +10.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per unit in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 12% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Peru ($X per unit), while Colombia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
