In 2021, shipments abroad of vulcanised rubber thread and cord decreased by -31.3% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, vulcanised rubber thread exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Brazil (X tons) was the key exporter of vulcanised rubber thread and cord, creating 78% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Peru (X tons), committing a 12% share of total exports. Colombia (X tons), Argentina (X tons) and Chile (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to vulcanised rubber thread exports from Brazil stood at +13.0%. At the same time, Peru (+31.4%), Argentina (+19.2%) and Colombia (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Peru emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +31.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Chile (-25.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In 2021, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 98% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a perceptible increase. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2021, purchases abroad of vulcanised rubber thread and cord increased by 9.7% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +58.0% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 44%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, vulcanised rubber thread imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +89.0% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Brazil was the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 54% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Argentina (X tons), Colombia (X tons) and Peru (X tons), together making up a 37% share of total imports. Ecuador (X tons), Venezuela (X tons) and Chile (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to vulcanised rubber thread imports into Brazil stood at +4.9%. At the same time, Colombia (+7.9%), Argentina (+5.7%), Chile (+2.5%), Peru (+2.1%) and Ecuador (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Colombia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +7.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Venezuela (-4.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Colombia (+3.1 p.p.) and Brazil (+2.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Peru and Venezuela saw its share reduced by -2.6% and -3.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In Brazil, vulcanised rubber thread imports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Argentina (+4.5% per year) and Peru (+0.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild slump.
