Wadding Market Size in MERCOSUR

The MERCOSUR wadding market expanded rapidly to $X in 2021, surging by 6.5% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Wadding Production in MERCOSUR

In value terms, wadding production rose to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 35%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

After four years of growth, overseas shipments of wadding decreased by -24.2% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wadding exports declined remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 21% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Paraguay represented the key exporter of wadding in MERCOSUR, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 72% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Brazil (X tons), mixing up a 15% share of total exports. The following exporters - Chile (X tons) and Peru (X tons) - each reached an 8.4% share of total exports.

Paraguay experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of wadding. Brazil (-6.1%), Peru (-7.3%) and Chile (-18.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Paraguay increased by +24 percentage points.

In value terms, Paraguay ($X) remains the largest wadding supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brazil ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Chile, with an 8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Paraguay stood at +1.0%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Brazil (-10.9% per year) and Chile (-13.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -4.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 9.1%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (+6.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Wadding Imports

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2021, purchases abroad of wadding increased by 8% to X tons, rising for the fourth consecutive year after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +56.1% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, wadding imports expanded notably to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +66.6% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Brazil (X tons), Chile (X tons), Peru (X tons) and Argentina (X tons) represented the key importer of wadding in MERCOSUR, constituting 78% of total import. It was distantly followed by Colombia (X tons) and Paraguay (X tons), together comprising an 11% share of total imports. Uruguay (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Brazil (with a CAGR of +9.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wadding in MERCOSUR, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Argentina ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Chile, with a 12% share.

In Brazil, wadding imports expanded at an average annual rate of +12.2% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Argentina (-2.6% per year) and Chile (+3.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -1.6% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per ton), while Paraguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
