In 2021, shipments abroad of walking-sticks, seat-sticks, whips and riding-crops decreased by -46.5% to X kg, falling for the fifth consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports saw a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 62%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, walking-sticks and whips exports shrank markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 104%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Chile (X kg) was the major exporter of walking-sticks, seat-sticks, whips and riding-crops, creating 56% of total exports. Argentina (X kg) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 11% share, followed by Brazil (10%), Uruguay (7.6%), Peru (7.2%) and Colombia (6.4%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to walking-sticks and whips exports from Chile stood at +9.7%. At the same time, Peru (+23.9%), Brazil (+11.6%) and Uruguay (+7.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Peru emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +23.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Argentina (-20.6%) and Colombia (-29.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Chile, Brazil, Peru and Uruguay increased by +47, +8.6, +6.8 and +6.1 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Chile ($X) remains the largest walking-sticks and whips supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($X), with a 5.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Argentina, with a 4.5% share.

In Chile, walking-sticks and whips exports expanded at an average annual rate of +19.4% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Brazil (+12.9% per year) and Argentina (-28.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 14% against the previous year. Export price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, walking-sticks and whips export price increased by +86.9% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 72% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while Uruguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Peru (+16.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in MERCOSUR

After two years of decline, overseas purchases of walking-sticks, seat-sticks, whips and riding-crops increased by 22% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 66%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, walking-sticks and whips imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Colombia (X tons), Brazil (X tons), Chile (X tons), Ecuador (X tons), Peru (X tons) and Argentina (X tons) represented the main importer of walking-sticks, seat-sticks, whips and riding-crops in MERCOSUR, mixing up 90% of total import. It was distantly followed by Venezuela (X tons), mixing up a 5.1% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Ecuador (with a CAGR of +12.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Chile ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported walking-sticks, seat-sticks, whips and riding-crops in MERCOSUR, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brazil ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Colombia, with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Chile stood at +9.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (+5.5% per year) and Colombia (+4.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, surging by 19% against the previous year. Import price indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, walking-sticks and whips import price increased by +39.3% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
