Exports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, the amount of whisky exported in MERCOSUR surged to X litres, picking up by 16% on the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a deep contraction. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X litres in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, whisky exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 45% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Brazil represented the key exporter of whisky in MERCOSUR, with the volume of exports recording X litres, which was approx. 58% of total exports in 2022. Argentina (X litres) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 18% share, followed by Chile (17%). Colombia (X litres) and Uruguay (X litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Brazil decreased at an average annual rate of -6.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Chile (+51.7%) and Colombia (+6.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Chile emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +51.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Argentina (-9.1%) and Uruguay (-17.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Chile (+17 p.p.), Brazil (+11 p.p.) and Colombia (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Uruguay saw its share reduced by -3.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X), Chile ($X) and Argentina ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 90% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Chile, with a CAGR of +48.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per litre in 2022, picking up by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per litre in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per litre), while Argentina ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+0.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, approx. X litres of whisky were imported in MERCOSUR; therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021 figures. Total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +58.2% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X litres, leveling off in the following year.

In value terms, whisky imports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Brazil was the main importing country with an import of around X litres, which amounted to 54% of total imports. Chile (X litres) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Colombia (X litres). All these countries together took approx. 28% share of total imports. Argentina (X litres), Uruguay (X litres), Paraguay (X litres) and Peru (X litres) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to whisky imports into Brazil stood at +8.9%. At the same time, Chile (+12.2%), Colombia (+10.4%), Peru (+3.5%) and Argentina (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Chile emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +12.2% from 2012-2022. Paraguay experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Uruguay (-6.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Brazil, Chile and Colombia increased by +23, +8.7 and +6.4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported whisky in MERCOSUR, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Chile ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Colombia, with a 15% share.

In Brazil, whisky imports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Chile (+5.7% per year) and Colombia (+4.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per litre, approximately mirroring the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 2.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per litre in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Paraguay ($X per litre), while Brazil ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (+0.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
