Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 8.3%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X litres. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wine of fresh grapes exports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 8.1% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Chile was the key exporter of wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) in MERCOSUR, with the volume of exports amounting to X litres, which was approx. 76% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Argentina (X litres), comprising a 23% share of total exports.

Chile was also the fastest-growing in terms of the wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) exports, with a CAGR of +1.1% from 2012 to 2022. Argentina (-3.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Chile (+10 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Argentina saw its share reduced by -9.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 11%. The level of export peaked at $X per litre in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per litre), while Chile stood at $X per litre.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine), when their volume decreased by -0.1% to X litres. Total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +17.3% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X litres in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.

In value terms, wine of fresh grapes imports reached $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +24.2% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 34%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Brazil was the largest importing country with an import of about X litres, which accounted for 64% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Colombia (X litres), Paraguay (X litres), Peru (X litres) and Ecuador (X litres), together comprising a 29% share of total imports. Venezuela (X litres) and Uruguay (X litres) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to wine of fresh grapes imports into Brazil stood at +7.7%. At the same time, Ecuador (+8.2%), Colombia (+4.6%), Peru (+4.6%) and Uruguay (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ecuador emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +8.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Paraguay (-2.5%) and Venezuela (-6.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Brazil increased by +16 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) in MERCOSUR, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Colombia ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Peru, with a 6.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Brazil totaled +6.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Colombia (+4.8% per year) and Peru (+5.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per litre, picking up by 3.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the import price increased by 9.7%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per litre in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Peru ($X per litre), while Venezuela ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
