Wood Charcoal Market Size in MERCOSUR

The MERCOSUR wood charcoal market dropped modestly to $X in 2021, remaining stable against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, saw a perceptible contraction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wood charcoal production dropped to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 50% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in MERCOSUR

In 2021, exports of wood charcoal in MERCOSUR soared to X tons, picking up by 28% against 2020. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, wood charcoal exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Paraguay was the largest exporter of wood charcoal in MERCOSUR, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 51% of total exports in 2021. Argentina (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Venezuela (X tons) and Brazil (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 44% share of total exports. Colombia (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Venezuela (with a CAGR of +71.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Paraguay ($X) remains the largest wood charcoal supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Argentina ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Venezuela, with an 8.9% share.

In Paraguay, wood charcoal exports increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Argentina (-7.3% per year) and Venezuela (+65.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 11% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Paraguay (+5.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Wood Charcoal Imports

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2021, the amount of wood charcoal imported in MERCOSUR skyrocketed to X tons, with an increase of 77% against the previous year. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wood charcoal imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Chile represented the main importer of wood charcoal in MERCOSUR, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 73% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Brazil (X tons), generating a 23% share of total imports. Uruguay (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Chile was also the fastest-growing in terms of the wood charcoal imports, with a CAGR of +8.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uruguay (+8.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Brazil (-11.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Chile (+40 p.p.) and Uruguay (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Brazil (-41.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest wood charcoal importing markets in MERCOSUR were Chile ($X), Brazil ($X) and Uruguay ($X), with a combined 98% share of total imports.

Uruguay, with a CAGR of +8.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 4.5% against the previous year. Import price indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, wood charcoal import price decreased by -18.1% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 52% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Chile ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
