The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the production volume increased by 19%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates decreased by -11.6% to X cubic meters, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 29%. The volume of export peaked at X cubic meters in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, exports of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates contracted modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Chile was the major exporter of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates in MERCOSUR, with the volume of exports recording X cubic meters, which was near 49% of total exports in 2021. Brazil (X cubic meters) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 32% share, followed by Uruguay (14%). Venezuela (X cubic meters) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Brazil (with a CAGR of +7.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per thousand cubic meters, picking up by 9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 11% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per thousand cubic meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Venezuela ($X per thousand cubic meters), while Chile ($X per thousand cubic meters) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Venezuela (+1.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2021, the amount of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates imported in MERCOSUR skyrocketed to X cubic meters, with an increase of 21% compared with the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, imports of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +81.6% against 2015 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Brazil (X cubic meters) represented the major importer of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates, generating 50% of total imports. Argentina (X cubic meters) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Uruguay (X cubic meters), Chile (X cubic meters), Venezuela (X cubic meters) and Peru (X cubic meters). All these countries together took approx. 47% share of total imports.

Imports into Brazil decreased at an average annual rate of -2.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Venezuela (+22.8%), Uruguay (+16.7%), Argentina (+10.3%) and Chile (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Venezuela emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +22.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Peru (-6.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Argentina (+9.8 p.p.), Uruguay (+9.8 p.p.) and Venezuela (+4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Peru and Brazil saw its share reduced by -4.6% and -20.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates importing markets in MERCOSUR were Chile ($X), Argentina ($X) and Brazil ($X), with a combined 77% share of total imports. Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.

Uruguay, with a CAGR of +12.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per cubic meter, rising by 5.2% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.6%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per cubic meter), while Brazil ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
