Wrapping Papers Market Size in MERCOSUR

The MERCOSUR wrapping papers market soared to $X in 2021, rising by 24% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a noticeable curtailment. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wrapping papers production expanded rapidly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 16%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Wrapping papers exports fell remarkably to X tons in 2021, which is down by -17% on 2020 figures. Total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +2.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank notably in the following year.

In value terms, wrapping papers exports totaled $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Brazil was the largest exporter of wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard in MERCOSUR, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 60% of total exports in 2021. Chile (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Colombia (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 35% share of total exports. Argentina (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to wrapping papers exports from Brazil stood at +6.4%. At the same time, Chile (+10.9%) and Argentina (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Chile emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +10.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Colombia (-7.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Chile and Brazil increased by +10 and +4.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest wrapping papers supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Chile ($X), with a 25% share of total exports. It was followed by Colombia, with a 6.2% share.

In Brazil, wrapping papers exports increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Chile (+8.1% per year) and Colombia (-10.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, growing by 21% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a noticeable decline. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Argentina ($X per ton) and Brazil ($X per ton), while Chile ($X per ton) and Colombia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (-1.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2021, supplies from abroad of wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of wrapping papers imports in 2021 were Peru (X tons), Argentina (X tons), Brazil (X tons), Chile (X tons) and Colombia (X tons), together amounting to 86% of total import. It was distantly followed by Ecuador (X tons), mixing up a 7% share of total imports. Paraguay (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Brazil (with a CAGR of +10.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest wrapping papers importing markets in MERCOSUR were Brazil ($X), Argentina ($X) and Peru ($X), with a combined 62% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Brazil, with a CAGR of +10.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 3.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 5.2%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Ecuador ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Peru (+0.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
