Imports into Mexico
In 2021, the amount of animal fats and oils imported into Mexico dropped dramatically to X tons, falling by -16.7% compared with 2020. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 1,092% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, animal fats imports dropped remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 1,483%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest animal fats supplier to Mexico, accounting for a 74% share of total imports. Moreover, animal fats imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Peru (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Italy (X tons), with a 5.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United States totaled +2.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Peru (-58.4% per year) and Italy (0.0% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of animal fats and oils to Mexico, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Peru ($X), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by the UK, with a 6.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the United States stood at +20.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Peru (-55.2% per year) and the UK (+41.8% per year).

The average animal fats import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -8.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average import price increased by 78%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+17.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
