Antibiotic Market Size in Mexico

For the sixth year in a row, the Mexican antibiotic market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 19% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption showed a remarkable increase. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Antibiotic Production in Mexico

In value terms, antibiotic production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, the total production indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +6.6% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 46%. Antibiotic production peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Mexico

In 2021, the amount of antibiotics exported from Mexico reduced remarkably to X tons, falling by -22.8% against the year before. Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, antibiotic exports declined notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 50%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Brazil (X tons), the United States (X tons) and Argentina (X tons) were the main destinations of antibiotic exports from Mexico, with a combined 69% share of total exports. These countries were followed by India, Colombia, the UK, Chile and Canada, which together accounted for a further 21%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the UK (with a CAGR of +11.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Brazil ($X), the United States ($X) and India ($X) were the largest markets for antibiotic exported from Mexico worldwide, with a combined 61% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Argentina, Colombia, the UK, Chile and Canada, which together accounted for a further 16%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, the UK, with a CAGR of +13.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average antibiotic export price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -7.3% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, antibiotic export price increased by +30.2% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 48% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+8.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Antibiotic Imports

Imports into Mexico

In 2021, purchases abroad of antibiotics increased by 36% to X tons, rising for the sixth consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, antibiotic imports reduced remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 18%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) was the main supplier of antibiotic to Mexico, with a 93% share of total imports. Moreover, antibiotic imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Spain (X tons), with a 3.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China totaled -3.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (-6.2% per year) and Spain (-5.6% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of antibiotics to Mexico, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 6.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (-7.5% per year) and Spain (-4.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average antibiotic import price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -46.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 653% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
