Avocado Market Size in Mexico

In 2022, the Mexican avocado market was finally on the rise to reach $X after three years of decline. Overall, consumption saw a prominent increase. Avocado consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Avocado Production in Mexico

In value terms, avocado production fell modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The average yield of avocados in Mexico fell modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, approximately mirroring the year before. Overall, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the yield increased by 6.3% against the previous year. The avocado yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then declined in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the harvested area of avocados in Mexico dropped slightly to X ha, stabilizing at the previous year. Over the period under review, the total harvested area indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. After three years of growth, overseas shipments of avocados decreased by -15.1% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +41.1% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 33%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

In value terms, avocado exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

The United States (X tons) was the main destination for avocado exports from Mexico, accounting for a 85% share of total exports. Moreover, avocado exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Canada (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Japan (X tons), with a 2.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United States amounted to +9.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Canada (+9.2% per year) and Japan (-6.9% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for avocados exports from Mexico, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Canada ($X), with an 8.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Japan, with a 2.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United States totaled +16.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Canada (+17.0% per year) and Japan (-0.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average avocado export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 38% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (+7.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2014, overseas purchases of avocados decreased by -96.7% to X tons for the first time since 2011, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports faced a dramatic curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 139%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then declined significantly in the following year.

In value terms, avocado imports fell significantly to $X in 2014. Overall, imports continue to indicate a sharp slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 266% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

In 2014, the United States (X tons) was the main supplier of avocado to Mexico, accounting for a approx. 100% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2014, the average annual growth rate of volume from the United States totaled -71.9%.

In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of avocados to Mexico.
