Imports into Mexico
In 2021, purchases abroad of carob decreased by -46.9% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports saw a pronounced descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 194%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, carob imports dropped notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 304%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Spain (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Switzerland (X tons) were the main suppliers of carob imports to Mexico, with a combined 93% share of total imports. These countries were followed by the United States and Peru, which together accounted for a further 6.6%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Peru (with a CAGR of +6.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of carob to Mexico, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Switzerland, with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Spain stood at -6.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Morocco (-63.2% per year) and Switzerland (-23.9% per year).

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Peru ($X per ton), while the price for Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+43.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
