Copper Market Size in Mexico

The Mexican copper market fell to $X in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Mexico

In 2022, the amount of copper exported from Mexico contracted markedly to X kg, declining by -20% against the previous year. Overall, exports recorded a dramatic contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 50%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, copper exports contracted sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a dramatic curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 93% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

China (X kg) was the main destination for copper exports from Mexico, accounting for a 90% share of total exports. Moreover, copper exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, South Korea (X kg), more than tenfold. Germany (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to China totaled -42.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Korea (-54.2% per year) and Germany (-52.1% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) remains the key foreign market for copper exports from Mexico, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with an 8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to China stood at -43.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Korea (-51.6% per year) and Germany (-53.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average copper export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 28% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+5.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Copper imports into Mexico soared to X tons in 2022, with an increase of 293% compared with 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a dramatic shrinkage. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
