Exports from Mexico

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of ethyl alcohol, when their volume increased by 501% to X litres. Overall, exports, however, showed a abrupt setback. The exports peaked at X litres in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, ethanol exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, faced a deep slump. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The United States (X litres) was the main destination for ethanol exports from Mexico, accounting for a 90% share of total exports. Moreover, ethanol exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Guatemala (X litres), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Ecuador (X litres), with a 2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United States was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Guatemala (+2.9% per year) and Ecuador (-3.0% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for ethyl alcohol exports from Mexico, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Guatemala ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Ecuador, with a 3.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United States totaled -5.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Guatemala (+3.1% per year) and Ecuador (-7.1% per year).

The average ethanol export price stood at $X per litre in 2022, with a decrease of -23.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the average export price increased by 83%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per litre in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Canada ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Colombia (+5.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, overseas purchases of ethyl alcohol increased by 17% to X litres, rising for the third consecutive year after seven years of decline. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 121% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X litres in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, ethanol imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 168% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In 2022, the United States (X litres) was the main ethanol supplier to Mexico, accounting for a 94% share of total imports. Moreover, ethanol imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Guatemala (X litres), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United States stood at -5.1%.

In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of ethyl alcohol to Mexico, comprising 99% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Guatemala ($X), with a 1% share of total imports.

The average ethanol import price stood at $X per litre in 2022, growing by 11% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average import price increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per litre in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per litre), while the price for Guatemala stood at $X per litre.
