Leather Market Size in Mexico

In 2021, shipments abroad of leather decreased by -29.3% to X tons, falling for the fourth consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 100% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, leather exports shrank slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The United States (X tons), China (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main destinations of leather exports from Mexico, together comprising 88% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in China (with a CAGR of +16.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for leather exports from Mexico, comprising 49% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 24% share of total exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 4.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United States amounted to -5.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (+5.5% per year) and Vietnam (+29.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average leather export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 41% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced slump. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+36.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Leather Imports
Imports into Mexico
In 2021, leather imports into Mexico fell to X tons, waning by -6.3% compared with 2020. Over the period under review, imports showed a mild downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 116%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, leather imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a deep contraction. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest leather supplier to Mexico, accounting for a 61% share of total imports. Moreover, leather imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Brazil (X tons), threefold. Italy (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from the United States was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (+0.7% per year) and Italy (+0.1% per year).
In value terms, Brazil ($X), the United States ($X) and Italy ($X) constituted the largest leather suppliers to Mexico, with a combined 81% share of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, Italy, with a CAGR of +0.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average leather import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average import price increased by 88%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for the United States ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
