The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 74% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The United States (X square meters) was the main destination for photographic film exports from Mexico, with a 95% share of total exports. It was followed by El Salvador (X square meters), with a 1.7% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United States amounted to -26.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: El Salvador (-2.8% per year) and Colombia (-76.6% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for photographic plates and film, photographic paper, paperboard and textiles and instant print film, sensitized, unexposed exports from Mexico, comprising 96% of total exports. Over the period under review, imports, however, faced a deep reduction. Imports peaked at X square meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, photographic film imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, the United States (X square meters) constituted the largest photographic film supplier to Mexico, accounting for a 75% share of total imports. Moreover, photographic film imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Japan (X square meters), eightfold. China (X square meters) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United States stood at -17.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (-20.1% per year) and China (+8.2% per year).
