The Mexican pork market rose significantly to $X in 2022, picking up by 13% against the previous year. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Pork Production in Mexico

In value terms, pork production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the production volume increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the average yield of pork in Mexico declined slightly to X kg per head, remaining constant against 2021 figures. Overall, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2022, overseas shipments of pork decreased by -16% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after nine years of growth. Overall, exports, however, showed buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 88% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pork exports declined to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Japan (X tons) was the main destination for pork exports from Mexico, with a 74% share of total exports. Moreover, pork exports to Japan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (X tons), fourfold. South Korea (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Japan totaled +10.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+15.1% per year) and South Korea (-0.9% per year).

In value terms, Japan ($X) remains the key foreign market for pork exports from Mexico, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by South Korea, with a 4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Japan totaled +7.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+14.6% per year) and South Korea (+2.1% per year).

In 2022, the average pork export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 7.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 38%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+3.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of pork increased by 31% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after four years of decline. In general, imports posted strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 77%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, pork imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a buoyant increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
