In 2022, the Mexican wheat gluten market increased by 32% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +14.5% from 2012 to 2014; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, wheat gluten exports skyrocketed to $X in 2014. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +16.5% from 2012 to 2014; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Guatemala (X tons), Belize (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main destinations of wheat gluten exports from Mexico, with a combined 87% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2014, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Belize (with a CAGR of +1,911.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Guatemala ($X) remains the key foreign market for wheat gluten exports from Mexico, comprising 50% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belize ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by the United States, with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2014, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Guatemala amounted to +10.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belize (+1,942.6% per year) and the United States (0.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2014, the average wheat gluten export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 2.5% against the previous year. Over the last two years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Guatemala ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Belize ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2014, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belgium (+30.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of wheat gluten, when their volume increased by 17% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 98%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wheat gluten imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -21.6% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of wheat gluten to Mexico, accounting for a 79% share of total imports. Moreover, wheat gluten imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X tons), sevenfold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to -2.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+1.2% per year) and Germany (+30.0% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of wheat gluten to Mexico, comprising 81% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 9.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 4.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from China stood at +4.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+4.7% per year) and Germany (+31.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average wheat gluten import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 26% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 91% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from China ($X per ton) and the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Germany ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
