Abrasives Market Size in the Middle East
In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the Middle Eastern abrasives market, when its value increased by 6.1% to $X. The total consumption indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -3.2% against 2017 indices. Abrasives exports surged to X tons in 2021, rising by 16% on the year before. Overall, exports recorded a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
In value terms, abrasives exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed buoyant growth. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Turkey dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 95% of total exports in 2021. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.
Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +13.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+17.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the United Arab Emirates emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +17.1% from 2012-2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest abrasives supplier in the Middle East, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with an 11% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey totaled +17.9%.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 42% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Turkey stood at $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+3.6%).
Abrasives Imports
Imports in the Middle East
In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of abrasives (natural), when their volume increased by 26% to X tons. In general, imports, however, showed a pronounced slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 55%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, abrasives imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 42%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) represented the largest importer of abrasives (natural), generating 49% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Saudi Arabia (X tons), Qatar (X tons), Israel (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons), together creating a 42% share of total imports. The following importers - Iraq (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons) - together made up 5.2% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to abrasives imports into the United Arab Emirates stood at -5.1%. At the same time, Iraq (+26.5%), Israel (+5.2%) and Qatar (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iraq emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +26.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Saudi Arabia (-2.0%), Bahrain (-4.2%) and Kuwait (-11.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Israel, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Iraq increased by +4.1, +3.2, +3 and +2.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Israel ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 82% share of total imports.
Israel, with a CAGR of +7.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -5.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Iraq ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kuwait (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
