Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, activated natural mineral products exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 101% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the one major exporters of activated natural mineral products, namely Turkey, represented more than two-thirds of total export.
Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the activated natural mineral products exports, with a CAGR of +27.6% from 2012 to 2021. Turkey (+8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) also remains the largest activated natural mineral products supplier in the Middle East.
In Turkey, activated natural mineral products exports expanded at an average annual rate of +20.9% over the period from 2012-2021.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, surging by 5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a abrupt curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 25%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Turkey.
From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Turkey amounted to -5.2% per year.
Imports of Activated Natural Mineral Products
Imports in the Middle East
Activated natural mineral products imports declined to X tons in 2021, with a decrease of -8% against 2020. In general, imports continue to indicate a pronounced slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 19%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, activated natural mineral products imports fell remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 30% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Turkey was the main importer of activated natural mineral products in the Middle East, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 48% of total imports in 2021. Saudi Arabia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by the United Arab Emirates (11%), Iraq (6%), Oman (5.7%), Israel (4.9%) and Iran (4.7%).
Imports into Turkey decreased at an average annual rate of -5.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Iraq (+55.7%), Oman (+6.1%), the United Arab Emirates (+4.4%) and Saudi Arabia (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iraq emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +55.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Israel (-5.5%) and Iran (-11.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Oman increased by +5.9, +5.5, +4.5 and +3.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 61% of total imports. Iran, Israel, Oman and Iraq lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.
Iraq, with a CAGR of +51.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -8.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 21%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Iran ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Israel (+3.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
