The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +84.9% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. Turkey dominates exports structure, recording X units, which was approx. 92% of total exports in 2022. Israel (X units) held a minor share of total exports.
Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the artificial parts of the body (excl. artificial teeth and dental fittings and artificial joints) exports, with a CAGR of +19.9% from 2012 to 2022. Israel (-10.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Turkey increased by +52 percentage points.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 14% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, orthopedic prosthetics imports declined to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Turkey (X units) was the main importer of artificial parts of the body (excl. artificial teeth and dental fittings and artificial joints), making up 48% of total imports. Iran (X units) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Israel (X units), the United Arab Emirates (X units) and Morocco (X units). All these countries together held near 32% share of total imports. The following importers - Iraq (X units), Lebanon (X units), Egypt (X units), Tunisia (X units), Algeria (X units) and Syrian Arab Republic (X units) - together made up 15% of total imports.
Imports into Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Iraq (+16.2%), Syrian Arab Republic (+13.7%), Iran (+9.4%), Israel (+8.3%), the United Arab Emirates (+6.1%), Morocco (+3.1%), Lebanon (+2.6%) and Tunisia (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iraq emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +16.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Algeria (-3.8%) and Egypt (-12.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Iran, Turkey, Iraq and Israel increased by +6.2, +4.7, +2.3 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X), Iran ($X) and Israel ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 68% share of total imports. The United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria and Syrian Arab Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Iraq, with a CAGR of +10.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per unit, waning by -23.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 27%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit, and then reduced markedly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per unit), while Syrian Arab Republic ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+18.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
