Bottled Water Market Size in MENA
The MENA's bottled water market fell slightly to $X in 2022, shrinking by -3.7% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +4.2% against 2020 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Bottled Water Production in MENA
In value terms, bottled water production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, posted a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 41% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports in MENA
In 2022, shipments abroad of bottled waters was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Total exports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -27.7% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, bottled water exports rose sharply to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 37%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Turkey (X tons) was the main exporter of bottled waters, committing 68% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Oman (X tons), together comprising a 21% share of total exports. The following exporters - Lebanon (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Palestine (X tons) - together made up 6.5% of total exports.
Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Palestine (+20.9%), Saudi Arabia (+19.7%) and Oman (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Palestine emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +20.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-1.9%) and Lebanon (-4.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Turkey (+19 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Lebanon (-3.5 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (-9.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest bottled water supplier in MENA, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Palestine, with a 3.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey totaled +6.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-2.5% per year) and Palestine (+20.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by 14%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Palestine ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Oman (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Bottled Water Imports
Imports in MENA
In 2022, purchases abroad of bottled waters increased by 6.3% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 15% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, bottled water imports contracted modestly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
The United Arab Emirates (X tons), Israel (X tons) and Oman (X tons) represented roughly 62% of total imports in 2022. Saudi Arabia (X tons) took a 7.4% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kuwait (6.6%), Morocco (5.2%) and Palestine (4.6%).
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Morocco (with a CAGR of +34.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest bottled water importing markets in MENA were the United Arab Emirates ($X), Israel ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X), with a combined 59% share of total imports. Kuwait, Oman, Palestine and Morocco lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.
Morocco, with a CAGR of +24.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -6.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kuwait (+4.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
