As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, calcium carbonate exports soared to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Turkey (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) were the main exporters of calcium carbonate in 2021, amounting to approx. 43% and 30% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Jordan (X tons), constituting a 19% share of total exports. The following exporters - Iran (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Oman (X tons) - each recorded a 5.8% share of total exports.

In value terms, the largest calcium carbonate supplying countries in MENA were Turkey ($X), Egypt ($X) and Jordan ($X), with a combined 89% share of total exports. Iran, Saudi Arabia and Oman lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 7.3%.

Among the main exporting countries, Oman, with a CAGR of +24.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 8.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the export price increased by 9.7%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, calcium carbonate imports in MENA surged to X tons, jumping by 18% against 2020. Total imports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -28.2% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, calcium carbonate imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 19%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) were the major importers of calcium carbonate in MENA, together reaching near 55% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X tons) and Libya (X tons), together committing a 17% share of total imports. Qatar (X tons), Iraq (X tons), Oman (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Israel (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Libya (with a CAGR of +15.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest calcium carbonate importing markets in MENA were Saudi Arabia ($X), Algeria ($X) and Morocco ($X), together accounting for 55% of total imports. Turkey, Israel, Qatar, Libya, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Kuwait and Iraq lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.

Qatar, with a CAGR of +12.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, approximately reflecting the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Iraq ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
