In 2022, the MENA's flaked or rolled cereal market decreased by -0.3% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. The total consumption indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -6.2% against 2020 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Production of Flaked or Rolled Cereals in MENA
In value terms, flaked or rolled cereal production fell to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 67%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
Exports of Flaked or Rolled Cereals
Exports in MENA
In 2022, the amount of flaked or rolled cereals exported in MENA reduced dramatically to X tons, which is down by -18% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a notable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 316%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, flaked or rolled cereal exports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a notable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 187%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
Exports by Country
Turkey prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 91% of total exports in 2022. The following exporters - the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Oman (X tons) - together made up 7.7% of total exports.
Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Oman (+15.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +15.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-7.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Turkey (+9.9 p.p.) and Oman (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of the United Arab Emirates (-9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest flaked or rolled cereal supplier in MENA, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 6.2% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey amounted to +4.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the United Arab Emirates (-5.8% per year) and Oman (+21.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 7.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Oman (+5.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Imports of Flaked or Rolled Cereals
Imports in MENA
In 2022, purchases abroad of flaked or rolled cereals decreased by -23.9% to X tons, falling for the fourth year in a row after four years of growth. Overall, imports saw a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 43% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, flaked or rolled cereal imports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 8.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Iraq prevails in imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 56% of total imports in 2022. Israel (X tons) held an 8.9% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Morocco (5.9%), Turkey (5.6%) and the United Arab Emirates (5.1%). The following importers - Egypt (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) - each resulted at a 5.5% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to flaked or rolled cereal imports into Iraq stood at -6.0%. At the same time, Morocco (+70.5%), Algeria (+27.6%), Egypt (+19.9%) and Turkey (+8.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +70.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-1.6%) and Israel (-3.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Morocco, Turkey, Egypt, Algeria, Israel and the United Arab Emirates increased by +5.9, +4.3, +2.7, +2.4, +2.2 and +1.8 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest flaked or rolled cereal importing markets in MENA were Iraq ($X), Israel ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), together accounting for 55% of total imports. Morocco, Turkey, Egypt and Algeria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.
Morocco, with a CAGR of +57.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -10.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 44%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
