Chick Peas Market Size in MENA

In 2022, the MENA's chick peas market increased by 2% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a mild shrinkage. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Chick Peas Production in MENA

In value terms, chick peas production fell modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 30%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Turkey (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of chick peas production, comprising approx. 59% of total volume. Moreover, chick peas production in Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Iran (X tons), threefold. Morocco (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 6.5% share.

In Turkey, chick peas production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Iran (-0.3% per year) and Morocco (+6.2% per year).

The average chick peas yield rose significantly to X kg per ha in 2022, picking up by 7.6% compared with the year before. Overall, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 8.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the chick peas yield attained the peak level at X kg per ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of chick peas were harvested in MENA; picking up by 1.8% against 2021. Over the period under review, the harvested area recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 7.4%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Chick Peas Exports

Exports in MENA

In 2022, shipments abroad of chick peas decreased by -20.2% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 220% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, chick peas exports reduced slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 242% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Turkey was the largest exporter of chick peas in MENA, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 75% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), mixing up a 16% share of total exports. The following exporters - Egypt (X tons) and Iran (X tons) - each recorded a 6.3% share of total exports.

Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the chick peas exports, with a CAGR of +21.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+7.3%) and Iran (+6.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Egypt experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Turkey (+35 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Iran (-3.2 p.p.), Egypt (-8.5 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (-14.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest chick peas supplier in MENA, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 3.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey stood at +19.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+7.4% per year) and Egypt (+0.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 36%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Egypt ($X per ton) and Turkey ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) and the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+0.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Chick Peas Imports

Imports in MENA

In 2022, the amount of chick peas imported in MENA declined to X tons, reducing by -10.2% on the previous year. Total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +3.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chick peas imports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a tangible expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 55%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Iraq (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) represented the key importer of chick peas in MENA, achieving 71% of total import. It was distantly followed by Iran (X tons), creating a 6.1% share of total imports. The following importers - Egypt (X tons), Lebanon (X tons), Jordan (X tons), Israel (X tons) and Oman (X tons) - together made up 15% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Iraq (with a CAGR of +29.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Turkey ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Algeria ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 49% of total imports. Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iran, Jordan, Israel, Lebanon and Oman lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 43%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Iraq, with a CAGR of +28.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 2.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 21% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Jordan (+1.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
