After three years of decline, overseas shipments of contact lenses increased by 2.7% to X units in 2022. Total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -14.2% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, contact lense exports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 56% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Turkey was the largest exporting country with an export of about X units, which accounted for 54% of total exports. Israel (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 18% share, followed by Iran (13%), Kuwait (7.7%) and Oman (5.2%). The United Arab Emirates (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +29.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Oman (+66.4%), Kuwait (+25.5%), Iran (+12.1%) and the United Arab Emirates (+5.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +66.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Israel (-8.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Turkey, Kuwait, Iran and Oman increased by +46, +6.4, +5.8 and +5.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest contact lense supplying countries in MENA were Turkey ($X), Israel ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a combined 91% share of total exports. Oman, Iran and Kuwait lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 7.7%.
Among the main exporting countries, Oman, with a CAGR of +82.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per unit, reducing by -11.2% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 25%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per unit), while Iran ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Israel (+12.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in MENA
In 2022, contact lense imports in MENA rose notably to X units, increasing by 5.3% compared with 2021 figures. In general, imports continue to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 73% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, contact lense imports reduced to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
The United Arab Emirates (X units) and Israel (X units) were the key importers of contact lenses in 2022, accounting for approx. 36% and 33% of total imports, respectively. Turkey (X units) took the next position in the ranking, distantly followed by Iraq (X units). All these countries together held approx. 23% share of total imports. Kuwait (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Iraq (with a CAGR of +27.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Israel ($X) and Turkey ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 57% of total imports.
Israel, with a CAGR of +5.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MENA stood at $X per unit in 2022, shrinking by -12.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the import price increased by 6.7%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($X per unit), while Iraq ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
