Fish Parts Market Size in MENA

The MENA's fish parts market expanded modestly to $X in 2022, with an increase of 2.6% against the previous year. Overall, consumption posted a remarkable increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Fish Parts Production in MENA

In value terms, fish parts production rose modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -2.4% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, approx. X tons of fish heads, tails and maws were exported in MENA; declining by -1.9% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 23% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, fish parts exports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 75%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Yemen represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 46% of total exports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Oman (X tons) and Morocco (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 41% share of total exports. Turkey (X tons), Jordan (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to fish parts exports from Yemen stood at -4.0%. At the same time, Jordan (+10.0%), Morocco (+8.6%), Oman (+6.1%) and Turkey (+5.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Jordan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +10.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Egypt (-3.2%) and the United Arab Emirates (-12.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Oman, Morocco, Yemen, Turkey and Jordan increased by +9.1, +7.3, +4.5, +2.5 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Yemen ($X) remains the largest fish parts supplier in MENA, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Oman, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Yemen amounted to -3.2%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-15.9% per year) and Oman (+11.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, surging by 13% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 51%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+8.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in MENA

In 2022, overseas purchases of fish heads, tails and maws were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, fish parts imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 202%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates dominates imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 77% of total imports in 2022. Oman (X tons) held a 9% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Bahrain (8.2%). Iraq (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to fish parts imports into the United Arab Emirates stood at -19.9%. At the same time, Bahrain (+52.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bahrain emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +52.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Oman (-2.6%) and Iraq (-3.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Bahrain, Oman and Iraq increased by +8.2, +7.5 and +3.1 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported fish heads, tails and maws in MENA, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Oman ($X), with a 5.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Iraq, with a 4.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the United Arab Emirates amounted to -16.8%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Oman (-11.8% per year) and Iraq (-0.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 1.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price posted a tangible expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 139%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
