Flax Fiber Market Size in MENA

The MENA's flax fiber market fell rapidly to $X in 2022, declining by -16.1% against the previous year. Overall, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Flax Fiber Production in MENA

In value terms, flax fiber production rose slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production posted perceptible growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 136% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The country with the largest volume of flax fiber production was Egypt (X tons), comprising approx. 99.9% of total volume.

In Egypt, flax fiber production increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012-2022.

The average flax fiber yield rose markedly to X tons per ha in 2022, picking up by 7.1% compared with 2021. The yield indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, flax fiber yield increased by +24.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 93% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the flax fiber yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of flax fiber were harvested in MENA; approximately reflecting the previous year's figure. Overall, the harvested area, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 2.6% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Flax Fiber Exports

Exports in MENA

In 2022, flax fiber exports in MENA skyrocketed to X tons, with an increase of 63% against 2021. In general, exports showed a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 158% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, flax fiber exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 166%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of flax fiber, namely Egypt, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

Egypt was also the fastest-growing in terms of the flax fiber exports, with a CAGR of +12.1% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) also remains the largest flax fiber supplier in MENA.

In Egypt, flax fiber exports increased at an average annual rate of +18.2% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, approximately reflecting the previous year. Export price indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, flax fiber export price increased by +51.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by 52%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, leveling off in the following year.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Egypt.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Egypt amounted to +5.5% per year.

Flax Fiber Imports

Imports in MENA

In 2022, flax fiber imports in MENA rose remarkably to X tons, increasing by 5.9% on 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, flax fiber imports reached $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +85.2% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 38%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Tunisia (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) prevails in imports structure, together committing 87% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), making up a 7.3% share of total imports. The following importers - the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Israel (X tons) - each amounted to a 4% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Israel (with a CAGR of +11.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest flax fiber importing markets in MENA were Tunisia ($X), Turkey ($X) and Egypt ($X), with a combined 93% share of total imports.

Turkey, with a CAGR of +12.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, falling by -2.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 30%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+2.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
