Grain Market Size in MENA
The MENA's grain market expanded rapidly to $X in 2022, with an increase of X% against the previous year. Overall, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the market value increased by X% against the previous year. Grain Production in MENA
In value terms, grain production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a mild decline. The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Turkey (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Iran (X tons), together accounting for X% of total production. Iraq, Morocco, Algeria and Syrian Arab Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Iraq (with a CAGR of X%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The average grain yield declined to X tons per ha in 2022, stabilizing at the year before. Overall, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the yield increased by X%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the grain yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, approx. X ha of grain were harvested in MENA; increasing by X% on the previous year's figure. In general, the harvested area, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the harvested area increased by X%. In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of grain, when their volume decreased by X% to X tons. In general, exports, however, posted a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by X%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted markedly in the following year.
In value terms, grain exports fell significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then contracted sharply in the following year.
Exports by Country
Turkey was the largest exporter of grain in MENA, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. X% of total exports in 2022. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a X% share, followed by Oman (X%). Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), Jordan (X tons) and Iran (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.
Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Oman (X%), Syrian Arab Republic (X%), Jordan (X%), Iran (X%) and the United Arab Emirates (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Turkey, Oman and Syrian Arab Republic increased by X, X and X percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) emerged as the largest grain supplier in MENA, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Oman, with a X% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey stood at X%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (X% per year) and Oman (X% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of X% against the previous year. Export price indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, grain export price increased by X% against 2018 indices. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

After two years of decline, purchases abroad of grain increased by X% to X tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, grain imports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by X% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the six major importers of grain, namely Algeria, Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Morocco, represented more than two-thirds of total import. The following importers - Yemen (X tons), Libya (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Israel (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Jordan (X tons) - together made up X% of total imports.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
