Graphite Market Size in MENA

The MENA's graphite market dropped to $X in 2021, waning by -5.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

Graphite Production in MENA

In value terms, graphite production expanded slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the production volume increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Graphite exports skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, increasing by 94% on the previous year. Over the period under review, exports recorded a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 116% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, graphite exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports posted a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 115%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Exports by Country

Turkey (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together committing 95% of total exports. Jordan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Jordan (with a CAGR of +74.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest graphite supplier in MENA, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 25% share of total exports.

In Turkey, graphite exports increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the United Arab Emirates (+14.7% per year) and Jordan (+48.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -34.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 44%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (-9.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Graphite Imports

Imports in MENA

In 2021, purchases abroad of graphite (natural) decreased by -0.2% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +6.9% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 44% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

In value terms, graphite imports rose modestly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +79.7% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 34% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Turkey represented the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 62% of total imports. Iran (X tons) held a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the United Arab Emirates (12%). The following importers - Egypt (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons) - each resulted at a 3.4% share of total imports.

Imports into Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kuwait (+57.2%), the United Arab Emirates (+22.4%), Iran (+4.3%) and Egypt (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kuwait emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +57.2% from 2012-2021. The United Arab Emirates (+8.5 p.p.) and Kuwait (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Iran saw its share reduced by -4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported graphite (natural) in MENA, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Iran ($X), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 6.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey totaled +1.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Iran (+4.0% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+14.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, surging by 4.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
