In 2021, the MENA's gummed paper market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption showed a pronounced contraction. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Gummed Paper Production in MENA
In value terms, gummed paper production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 16%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in MENA
In 2021, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of gummed paper and paperboard (excluding self-adhesives), when their volume increased by 7.4% to X tons. Overall, exports continue to indicate a slight expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 155% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, gummed paper exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 42%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Israel (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) represented the main exporters of gummed paper and paperboard (excluding self-adhesives) in MENA, together constituting 67% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Egypt (X tons), together mixing up a 26% share of total exports. Tunisia (X tons) held a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Tunisia (with a CAGR of +13.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Israel ($X) remains the largest gummed paper supplier in MENA, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 17% share.
In Israel, gummed paper exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-0.7% per year) and Turkey (+2.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 2.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 93% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+2.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Gummed Paper Imports
Imports in MENA
In 2021, the amount of gummed paper and paperboard (excluding self-adhesives) imported in MENA dropped modestly to X tons, stabilizing at 2020. Over the period under review, imports showed a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, gummed paper imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a perceptible slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 17%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Saudi Arabia (X tons) was the largest importer of gummed paper and paperboard (excluding self-adhesives), creating 43% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) took a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Algeria (8.2%), Iraq (7.7%) and Egypt (5.6%). Turkey (X tons), Israel (X tons), Oman (X tons), Iran (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to gummed paper imports into Saudi Arabia stood at -9.2%. At the same time, Iraq (+29.4%), Israel (+6.1%), Oman (+5.7%), Iran (+2.6%) and the United Arab Emirates (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iraq emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +29.4% from 2012-2021. Tunisia and Egypt experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Algeria (-1.6%), Morocco (-4.0%) and Turkey (-14.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of the United Arab Emirates, Iraq, Algeria, Egypt, Israel and Oman increased by +7.4, +7.3, +2.6, +2, +2 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
