Exports in MENA

In 2021, shipments abroad of hairpins, curling pins, curling grips and hair-curlers increased by 27% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, recorded a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 49%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hairpin exports reduced slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 23%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Turkey (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) represented the largest exporters of hairpins, curling pins, curling grips and hair-curlers in MENA, together resulting at approx. 70% of total exports. Tunisia (X tons) took an 8.1% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Palestine (6.5%) and Lebanon (4.7%). The following exporters - Iran (X tons) and Israel (X tons) - each accounted for a 6.1% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Israel (with a CAGR of +32.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Turkey ($X), Palestine ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 72% of total exports. These countries were followed by Tunisia, Israel, Lebanon and Iran, which together accounted for a further 23%.

Israel, with a CAGR of +33.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, waning by -24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 42% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Palestine ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+4.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, approx. X tons of hairpins, curling pins, curling grips and hair-curlers were imported in MENA; which is down by -11.9% against 2020 figures. In general, imports continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hairpin imports stood at $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of hairpin imports in 2021 were Saudi Arabia (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Morocco (X tons), together resulting at 49% of total import. Tunisia (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Iraq (X tons), Iran (X tons), Palestine (X tons), Yemen (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons). All these countries together held near 37% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Palestine (with a CAGR of +14.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Palestine ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 53% share of total imports.

Palestine, with a CAGR of +15.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Import price indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, hairpin import price increased by +30.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
