The country with the largest volume of hazelnut production was Turkey (X tons), comprising approx. 98% of total volume. It was followed by Iran (X tons), with a 1.8% share of total production.

The hazelnut harvested area declined slightly to X ha in 2021, flattening at 2020 figures. The total harvested area indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, hazelnut harvested area increased by +73.9% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to hazelnut production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2020, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

Exports in MENA
In 2021, overseas shipments of hazelnuts were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a notable increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country
In 2021, Turkey (X tons) was the main exporter of hazelnuts in MENA, mixing up 98% of total export.
Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hazelnuts exports, with a CAGR of +2.9% from 2012 to 2021. While the share of Turkey (+5.9 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) also remains the largest hazelnut supplier in MENA.

Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -15.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 47% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Turkey.

Imports in MENA
In 2021, approx. X tons of hazelnuts were imported in MENA; jumping by 129% on the year before. In general, imports, however, saw a perceptible descent. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, hazelnut imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a noticeable downturn. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of hazelnut imports in 2021 were Algeria (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Iraq (X tons), Iran (X tons) and Egypt (X tons), together resulting at 86% of total import. Tunisia (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Iran (with a CAGR of +37.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest hazelnut importing markets in MENA were Algeria ($X), Iran ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), together accounting for 58% of total imports.
Iran, with a CAGR of +38.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -19.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the import price increased by 25%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Lebanon ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Iraq (+1.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
