For the eighth year in a row, MENA recorded growth in overseas shipments of industrial machinery for the manufacture or preparation of confectionery, cocoa or chocolate, which increased by 8.2% to X units in 2022. In general, exports showed buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
In value terms, confectionery-making industrial machinery exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports posted strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 41%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Turkey dominates exports structure, resulting at X units, which was near 90% of total exports in 2022. Tunisia (X units), Lebanon (X units) and the United Arab Emirates (X units) held a relatively small share of total exports.
Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +13.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+25.0%), Lebanon (+9.8%) and Tunisia (+7.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the United Arab Emirates emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +25.0% from 2012-2022. While the share of Turkey (+8.6 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Tunisia (-1.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest confectionery-making industrial machinery supplier in MENA, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 4.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Lebanon, with a 3.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey amounted to +13.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the United Arab Emirates (+27.2% per year) and Lebanon (+12.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per unit in 2022, with an increase of 6.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 20%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per unit), while Turkey ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lebanon (+2.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in MENA
In 2022, the amount of industrial machinery for the manufacture or preparation of confectionery, cocoa or chocolate imported in MENA surged to X units, increasing by 24% compared with the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 37%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, confectionery-making industrial machinery imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -7.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 71%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Iran (X units), distantly followed by Turkey (X units), Algeria (X units), the United Arab Emirates (X units), Morocco (X units), Iraq (X units), Jordan (X units) and Lebanon (X units) were the largest importers of industrial machinery for the manufacture or preparation of confectionery, cocoa or chocolate, together comprising 85% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Iraq (with a CAGR of +42.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Turkey ($X), Iran ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 51% share of total imports. Algeria, Morocco, Jordan, Iraq and Lebanon lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.
Iraq, with a CAGR of +37.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MENA stood at $X per unit in 2022, declining by -12.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 25%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per unit), while Lebanon ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Jordan (+9.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
