Exports in MENA

For the third year in a row, MENA recorded growth in overseas shipments of iron or steel screw hooks and screw rings, which increased by 9.4% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, metal screw hook exports soared to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +107.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 35%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Turkey represented the key exporter of iron or steel screw hooks and screw rings in MENA, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 59% of total exports in 2022. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Egypt (9.2%), Tunisia (6.9%) and Saudi Arabia (6%). Bahrain (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Bahrain (+50.1%), Tunisia (+9.8%) and Egypt (+5.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bahrain emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +50.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Saudi Arabia (-2.6%) and the United Arab Emirates (-4.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Tunisia, Egypt, Turkey and Bahrain increased by +4.1, +3.5, +3.2 and +3 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest metal screw hook supplier in MENA, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with an 8.5% share.

In Turkey, metal screw hook exports expanded at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+10.1% per year) and Tunisia (+11.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, growing by 15% against the previous year. Export price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, metal screw hook export price increased by +98.5% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+15.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of iron or steel screw hooks and screw rings decreased by -55.9% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 23%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, metal screw hook imports dropped remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 41%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Turkey (X tons), distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Bahrain (X tons), Israel (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Libya (X tons) and Oman (X tons) represented the main importers of iron or steel screw hooks and screw rings, together mixing up 85% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Bahrain (with a CAGR of +36.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest metal screw hook importing markets in MENA were Turkey ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Morocco ($X), together comprising 60% of total imports. Israel, Tunisia, Bahrain, Libya and Oman lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 25%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Bahrain, with a CAGR of +24.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 30% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.9%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+17.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
