In 2022, after seven years of decline, there was significant growth in the MENA's jute and jute-like fibers market, when its value increased by 21% to $X. In general, consumption, however, showed a pronounced decrease. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Production of Jute And Jute-Like Fibers in MENA

In value terms, jute and jute-like fibers production skyrocketed to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production saw prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 922% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Turkey (X tons) remains the largest jute and jute-like fibers producing country in MENA, comprising approx. 73% of total volume. Moreover, jute and jute-like fibers production in Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Saudi Arabia (X tons), threefold.

In Turkey, jute and jute-like fibers production expanded at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Saudi Arabia (+277.8% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+1.1% per year).

Exports of Jute And Jute-Like Fibers

Exports in MENA

In 2022, the amount of jute and jute-like fibers exported in MENA contracted sharply to X tons, with a decrease of -70.9% against 2021. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 993%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, jute and jute-like fibers exports reduced notably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 448% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Turkey represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 70% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), creating a 17% share of total exports. Tunisia (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and Israel (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to jute and jute-like fibers exports from Turkey stood at +12.3%. At the same time, Tunisia (+28.2%), the United Arab Emirates (+17.7%) and Israel (+12.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tunisia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +28.2% from 2012-2022. Egypt and Algeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Turkey (+16 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+8.7 p.p.), Tunisia (+3.5 p.p.) and Algeria (+2.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Egypt (-4.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest jute and jute-like fibers supplying countries in MENA were the United Arab Emirates ($X), Turkey ($X) and Tunisia ($X), with a combined 55% share of total exports.

The United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +28.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 105% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed mild growth. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+8.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports of Jute And Jute-Like Fibers

Imports in MENA

In 2022, approx. X tons of jute and jute-like fibers were imported in MENA; with an increase of 3.7% compared with the year before. Overall, imports, however, saw a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, jute and jute-like fibers imports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a noticeable setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 37% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Tunisia was the largest importer of jute and jute-like fibers in MENA, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 57% of total imports in 2022. Egypt (X tons) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the United Arab Emirates (6.4%). Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Djibouti (X tons), Jordan (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and Libya (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to jute and jute-like fibers imports into Tunisia stood at +3.2%. At the same time, Egypt (+11.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Egypt emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +11.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Syrian Arab Republic (-2.1%), Djibouti (-4.0%), Jordan (-4.3%), the United Arab Emirates (-4.3%), Algeria (-8.4%), Libya (-20.9%) and Saudi Arabia (-25.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tunisia (+36 p.p.) and Egypt (+12 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Libya (-10 p.p.) and Saudi Arabia (-27.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Egypt ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 75% share of total imports.

Egypt, with a CAGR of +13.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 8.2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 27% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
