The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -0.8% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Morocco (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Jordan (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Iraq (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Iran (X tons) represented roughly 87% of total imports in 2021. Yemen (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +16.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Morocco ($X), Jordan ($X) and Turkey ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 49% of total imports. These countries were followed by Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Iraq, Algeria, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Yemen, which together accounted for a further 41%.

Iraq, with a CAGR of +12.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 11% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+2.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
