The MENA's malt market rose modestly to $X in 2021, growing by 4.6% against the previous year. Overall, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Malt Production in MENA
In value terms, malt production expanded significantly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the production volume increased by 23% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.
Malt Exports
Exports in MENA
In 2021, shipments abroad of malt (not roasted) increased by 46% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, saw a dramatic contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 232% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, malt exports totaled $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a sharp shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 207%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Lebanon (X tons) represented the major exporter of malt (not roasted), generating 75% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Israel (X tons), committing a 16% share of total exports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to malt exports from Lebanon stood at +14.7%. At the same time, Israel (+103.7%) and the United Arab Emirates (+17.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Israel emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +103.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Egypt (-46.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Lebanon, Israel and the United Arab Emirates increased by +72, +16 and +4.3 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Lebanon ($X) remains the largest malt supplier in MENA, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Israel ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 6.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Lebanon stood at +4.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Israel (+98.5% per year) and Egypt (-43.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -31.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 129% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Malt Imports
Imports in MENA
In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of malt (not roasted), when their volume increased by 16% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports recorded a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 45%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, malt imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 40% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Turkey was the key importer of malt (not roasted) in MENA, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near 51% of total imports in 2021. Algeria (X tons) held a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Tunisia (12%), Israel (9.7%) and Morocco (5.5%). Djibouti (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.
Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the malt (not roasted) imports, with a CAGR of +63.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Morocco (+13.3%), Israel (+1.9%), Djibouti (+1.9%) and Algeria (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Tunisia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Turkey (+49 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Djibouti, Israel, Tunisia and Algeria saw its share reduced by -2.6%, -9.4%, -16.2% and -17.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported malt (not roasted) in MENA, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Algeria ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 12% share.
In Turkey, malt imports increased at an average annual rate of +57.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Algeria (-1.5% per year) and Tunisia (-1.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, approximately reflecting the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 7.5%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Djibouti ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
