In 2021, the MENA's marble and travertine market increased by 5.2% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, consumption showed a pronounced decline. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, marble and travertine production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 18%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in MENA
In 2021, shipments abroad of marble and travertine was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a pronounced setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 36%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, marble and travertine exports reached $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a perceptible slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 30%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Turkey was the major exporter of marble and travertine in MENA, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 82% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Iran (X tons), achieving a 10% share of total exports. The following exporters - Tunisia (X tons) and Oman (X tons) - each amounted to a 4% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to marble and travertine exports from Turkey stood at -2.3%. At the same time, Oman (+2.2%) and Tunisia (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +2.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Iran (-2.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Turkey increased by +3.8 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest marble and travertine supplier in MENA, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Iran ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 1.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey amounted to -1.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Iran (-1.2% per year) and Tunisia (+5.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, falling by -4.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 4.9% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Iran ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+3.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Marble And Travertine Imports
Imports in MENA
After two years of decline, supplies from abroad of marble and travertine increased by 48% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 444%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, marble and travertine imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable setback. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of marble and travertine imports in 2021 were Algeria (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Jordan (X tons), together resulting at 58% of total import. Qatar (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Tunisia (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Syrian Arab Republic (X tons). All these countries together took near 26% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Qatar (with a CAGR of +26.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported marble and travertine in MENA, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Algeria ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Jordan, with a 9.2% share.
In Egypt, marble and travertine imports expanded at an average annual rate of +10.6% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Algeria (-0.5% per year) and Jordan (-1.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -8.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 550%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Qatar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
