After two years of growth, shipments abroad of oleic, linoleic or linolenic acids, their salts and esters decreased by -49.7% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 350% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then fell rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, oleic, linoleic or linolenic acids exports declined significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 153%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank significantly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Turkey represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 74% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Iran (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons), together comprising a 25% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to oleic, linoleic or linolenic acids exports from Turkey stood at +30.3%. At the same time, Iran (+102.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iran emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +102.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-14.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+59 p.p.) and Iran (+16 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the United Arab Emirates saw its share reduced by -74.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, the largest oleic, linoleic or linolenic acids supplying countries in MENA were Turkey ($X), Iran ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), together accounting for 99% of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Iran, with a CAGR of +90.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 59% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a abrupt decrease. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+1.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in MENA
In 2021, imports of oleic, linoleic or linolenic acids, their salts and esters in MENA soared to X tons, jumping by 96% on the year before. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable slump. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, oleic, linoleic or linolenic acids imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible decrease. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Turkey (X tons) represented the major importer of oleic, linoleic or linolenic acids, their salts and esters, committing 44% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 27% share, followed by Iran (12%), Israel (5.1%) and Egypt (4.9%). The following importers - Algeria (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) - together made up 4.8% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Morocco (with a CAGR of +28.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported oleic, linoleic or linolenic acids, their salts and esters in MENA, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Iran ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 19% share.
In Turkey, oleic, linoleic or linolenic acids imports shrank by an average annual rate of -1.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Iran (+7.3% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-0.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -3.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Iran ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
