In 2021, the MENA's preserved olive market decreased by -49.2% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after eight years of growth. In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, preserved olive exports rose to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Morocco (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) represented roughly 79% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), making up a 14% share of total exports. Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Egypt (with a CAGR of +8.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest preserved olive supplying countries in MENA were Morocco ($X), Turkey ($X) and Egypt ($X), together comprising 94% of total exports.

Egypt, with a CAGR of +8.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -6.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a slight reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 9.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+0.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, overseas purchases of olives prepared or preserved increased by 16% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +43.4% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Iraq (X tons) represented roughly 47% of total imports in 2021. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Algeria (8.1%), Libya (8.1%) and Israel (7.7%). Oman (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Oman (with a CAGR of +13.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest preserved olive importing markets in MENA were Saudi Arabia ($X), Iraq ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a combined 57% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Israel, Libya, Oman and Algeria, which together accounted for a further 29%.

Oman, with a CAGR of +14.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 6.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
