In 2021, the MENA's phosphorus, arsenic and selenium market increased by 45% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, recorded a abrupt decline. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, phosphorus, arsenic and selenium production stood at $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 101%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in MENA
Phosphorus, arsenic and selenium exports rose notably to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 10% on 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a noticeable decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 238%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, phosphorus, arsenic and selenium exports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, faced a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 358%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Egypt (X tons) was the main exporter of phosphorus, arsenic and selenium, making up 74% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Jordan (X tons), together committing a 21% share of total exports. Israel (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Egypt increased at an average annual rate of +31.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Jordan (+58.6%), Israel (+19.0%) and the United Arab Emirates (+12.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Jordan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +58.6% from 2012-2021. While the share of Egypt (+69 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+11 p.p.), Jordan (+5.5 p.p.) and Israel (+2.8 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest phosphorus, arsenic and selenium supplying countries in MENA were the United Arab Emirates ($X), Egypt ($X) and Jordan ($X), together accounting for 71% of total exports.
Among the main exporting countries, Jordan, with a CAGR of +94.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 3.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 66% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Jordan (+22.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in MENA
Phosphorus, arsenic and selenium imports skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, increasing by 53% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, phosphorus, arsenic and selenium imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 86%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Turkey (X tons) was the largest importer of phosphorus, arsenic and selenium, comprising 44% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Iran (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Israel (X tons) and Egypt (X tons), together creating a 47% share of total imports. Morocco (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to phosphorus, arsenic and selenium imports into Turkey stood at +13.9%. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+17.1%), Israel (+16.9%), Morocco (+11.8%), Algeria (+7.9%) and Iran (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the United Arab Emirates emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +17.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Egypt (-4.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Israel, Iran and Morocco increased by +31, +9.8, +7.1, +4.3 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Iran ($X) and Turkey ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 72% share of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, the United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +3.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 3.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 62% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (-4.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
