The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, sewing thread exports contracted to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +46.3% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 15%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 17%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sewing thread imports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a mild setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 9.6%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Turkey represented the main importer of sewing thread of man-made filaments or staple fibers in MENA, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 33% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Iran (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Oman (X tons) and Iraq (X tons), together achieving a 47% share of total imports. Jordan (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Djibouti (X tons), Yemen (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Turkey experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of sewing thread of man-made filaments or staple fibers. At the same time, Oman (+12.1%), Djibouti (+11.3%), Iraq (+9.3%), Yemen (+9.0%), Iran (+4.0%), Tunisia (+2.9%) and Morocco (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +12.1% from 2012-2022. Jordan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Syrian Arab Republic (-6.4%), the United Arab Emirates (-7.3%), Algeria (-7.9%) and Egypt (-15.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Turkey, Iran, Oman, Iraq, Tunisia, Morocco, Djibouti and Yemen increased by +7.2, +5, +3.9, +3.1, +2.9, +2.5, +2.1 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest sewing thread importing markets in MENA were Turkey ($X), Tunisia ($X) and Morocco ($X), with a combined 54% share of total imports. Jordan, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Iraq, Oman, Djibouti, Yemen, Algeria and Syrian Arab Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 43%.

Djibouti, with a CAGR of +14.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 11%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Jordan ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Yemen (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
