Slate Market Size in MENA

After nine years of growth, the MENA's slate market decreased by -4.7% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed strong growth. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

Slate Production in MENA

In value terms, slate production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 25% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

After three years of decline, overseas shipments of slate increased by 50% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports showed a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 264%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, slate exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -7.9% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 94% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Turkey dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 95% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), mixing up a 4.6% share of total exports.

Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the slate exports, with a CAGR of +14.5% from 2012 to 2021. Egypt experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Turkey increased by +13 percentage points.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest slate supplier in MENA, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 16% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey amounted to +9.8%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 5.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 72%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Turkey amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+2.1%).

Slate Imports

Imports in MENA

In 2021, overseas purchases of slate increased by 9.6% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 64% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, slate imports fell slightly to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 53% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Morocco (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) represented the main importers of slate in 2021, reaching approx. 24% and 22% of total imports, respectively. Israel (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Bahrain (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and Iraq (X tons). All these countries together took near 47% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Iraq (with a CAGR of +39.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported slate in MENA, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Israel ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Morocco, with an 11% share.

In the United Arab Emirates, slate imports increased at an average annual rate of +15.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Israel (+7.5% per year) and Morocco (+14.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -10.9% against the previous year. Import price indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, slate import price decreased by -15.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 41% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
