In 2022, the MENA's market for solar cells and light-emitting diodes decreased by -62.8% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a buoyant expansion. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

In 2022, the amount of solar cells and light-emitting diodes exported in MENA skyrocketed to X units, rising by 34% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 229% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, solar cells and light-emitting diodes exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports posted a resilient increase. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Turkey represented the major exporting country with an export of around X units, which finished at 51% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Israel (X units), Jordan (X units) and the United Arab Emirates (X units), together generating a 37% share of total exports. The following exporters - Tunisia (X units), Morocco (X units) and Oman (X units) - together made up 12% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to solar cells and light-emitting diodes exports from Turkey stood at +52.1%. At the same time, Tunisia (+98.5%), Oman (+78.3%), Jordan (+27.5%), Israel (+26.3%), Morocco (+9.9%) and the United Arab Emirates (+6.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tunisia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +98.5% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Turkey, Tunisia and Oman increased by +43, +4.4 and +2.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Turkey ($X) and Jordan ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 93% share of total exports. Tunisia, Israel, Morocco and Oman lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 6.5%.

Among the main exporting countries, Tunisia, with a CAGR of +58.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 189% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a abrupt decline. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per unit), while Israel ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+7.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of solar cells and light-emitting diodes, when their volume decreased by -53.6% to X units. In general, imports, however, posted significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 122% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2021, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, solar cells and light-emitting diodes imports contracted notably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 68% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

Israel was the major importer of solar cells and light-emitting diodes in MENA, with the volume of imports resulting at X units, which was approx. 50% of total imports in 2022. Oman (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Egypt (X units), Turkey (X units) and Saudi Arabia (X units). All these countries together took approx. 41% share of total imports. The following importers - the United Arab Emirates (X units) and Tunisia (X units) - each finished at a 3.9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to solar cells and light-emitting diodes imports into Israel stood at +30.5%. At the same time, Oman (+83.0%), Egypt (+61.3%), Saudi Arabia (+37.2%), Turkey (+36.0%), Tunisia (+32.6%) and the United Arab Emirates (+8.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +83.0% from 2012-2022. While the share of Oman (+12 p.p.), Egypt (+11 p.p.), Turkey (+3.3 p.p.) and Saudi Arabia (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Israel (-4 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (-11.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Among the main importing countries, Egypt, with a CAGR of +63.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per unit in 2022, picking up by 81% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt curtailment. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
